Monday 31st August in Huddersfield.
Monday dawned wet and cold - well, it is August Bank Holiday after all! We are not in a hurry and decided to take a day off, so we donned warm clothing, grabbed our large umbrella and set off to explore. Our lovely mooring is very quiet and peaceful, given its proximity to the city centre.
As we walked up the steps behind MM towards Sainsbury's, we were assaulted by a vast plethora of tin boxes. The contrast, from the peace of the canal to the frenetic chaos of the roads in just a few yards, never ceases to amaze.
The rain was even heavier down south and M couldn't help feeling that the Reading Festival must have been a quagmire; it was already deep in mud when we came through there on Thursday.
The centre of Huddersfield is pedestrianised and is very pleasant as it has many beautiful buildings and "real" shops alongside the chain stores. One in particular, in the large shopping centre, was just a tad familiar!
We made a detour on the way back by calling in at the Aspley Marina and had a long conversation with Alan, who had been so helpful at Lock 3 yesterday.
It was, in a way, quite nostalgic, as we had called in here about five years ago, before MM was launched, to enquire about the practicality of bringing a 60ft boat through the Huddersfield Broad Canal. Then, we were novice boaters and it all seemed so new and vaguely scary! The reality, as we discovered yesterday, was a bit scary, but do-able nonetheless!
R made a short sally into Sainsbury's and returned with two cases of wine for MM (just the essentials). As the rain continued, we decided to have a quiet afternoon.
MM stayed moored up all day and, thanks to Sue on Annabel, we had a hookup for power.
