Monday 5th September, 2016 in Ellesmere.
A big birthday has to start with a big breakfast! It was, however, in reality "brunch", as we had spent the earlier part of the morning having coffee with Peter and Sarah on "Simplicity".
How good to see the sun again! Yesterday's washing finally dried, especially once we moved MM a few yards down the canal to a sunnier spot.
The basin at the end of the arm is most attractive, a classic canal setting. One of the pretty cottages in the background is for sale - and very affordable. Tempting!
R thought that he would prefer the one on the right, which had three garages!
The C&RT has started putting up notices that look very officious, but on closer inspection are great fun. We have started to collect them and photograph them whenever we see them.
A walk round Ellesmere was mandatory. This is Vermeulen's, a deli/butcher's shop that is famous amongst the boating community.
There are many very old timber frame buildings in the town. This one used to be the White Lion Pub but is now an antiques shop.
We found a lovely tea room serving afternoon tea and also sweet and savoury crêpes. M had a sugar and lemon crêpe while R had a maple syrup and ice cream crêpe. Delicious!
In the evening, we went to a local Greek restaurant called "Meze". Our welcome was even warmer when M started speaking Greek to the proprietor - who turned out to have spent much of his life near Glyfada where M's former Greek family come from.
We had the Meze Platter for two, which was not only excellent but reminded us both of our times in Greece. Lovely.
Altogether a very quiet, enjoyable and relaxing birthday.
Today: MM stayed moored up.
