A Non-existent Bus and a Visit to Daventry.

Friday 9th October, 2015 in Braunston
Today, we are moored up in the Braunston Marina. As always, it's a delight to see the early morning mist on the water.
As we set off, R made a new friend on the way.
This really is a "picture postcard" marina.
Next to the marina office, we noticed nb "Tail End Charlie", the little boat on the left.  It belongs to our friend Angela and is for sale. You can just see the spire of Braunston church in the distance.
Second breakfast in the Gongoozler's Rest was a must!
We walked to the bus stop just outside the marina and waited for the bus to Daventry, which runs every hour at 41 minutes past the hour, according to the timetable. At the appointed hour, no bus came - but a very kind lady who was passing told us that the bus no longer stopped here and if we wanted to catch it we would have to go up to the village of Braunston on the other side of the canal! Bother! So we walked across the canal and up the hill to Braunston village where we consoled ourselves with a coffee at the village community cafĂ©  before catching the bus an hour later.
The route into Daventry was circuitous, through new housing developments and industrial units on the western edge of town.
Daventry was once a little market town but is now sadly overwhelmed by overspill housing from Birmingham and continues to grow with endless housing estates of indeterminate modern design. Any sense of identity was erased from the little town years ago.
M lived here for fourteen years and was saddened to see how it has changed. The centre still has some pleasant old buildings such as Sheaf Street...
And the old Market Square has thankfully survived...
But ugly new buildings and shops have proliferated around the old town...
M used to work in the office at Waitrose when she lived here. Even that has expanded since she left and the old recreation ground opposite is now a bus station.
Feeling a little sad at the changes over the last 25 years, we finally caught the bus back to Braunston.
Today: No movement.
