A Rare Perched Kingfisher.

Friday 11th September 2020 at Great Haywood.

A "Twitcher's" delight! As we were having breakfast, a beautiful kingfisher perched for some time on the metal railing on the other side of the canal. R managed to get a few good photographs with the telephoto lens, although he had to take them at an acute angle through the window as any movement outside would have scared him off (the bird, not Robin!).

Meanwhile two large herons perched high on the trees opposite but not for long enough to get a picture. These large birds, with their long spindly legs, look so strange perched in trees!

We joined Bridgett and Peter for coffee in their house, which was lovely and gave M another chance to admire their beautiful garden.

It was a tad warmer as we set off and did the two locks down to Great Haywood. Our favourite mooring spot opposite the café was free, so we took it; a good decision as there were no free moorings further on.

M couldn't resist chips at the café while R had excellent toast, butter and marmalade.

We had a quiet afternoon and decided to stay here overnight. We are going to head towards Braunston but probably don't need to be there for a couple of weeks, so we can take our time and don't need to rush. Narrowboaters do it slowly - as the old saying goes!!!

Today: 3 miles, 2 locks and 1.5 hours.

Trip: 27 miles, 11 locks and 19.8 hours.
