Back to Try Again!

Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th September 2020 from Aston Marina to Weston.

We left home after breakfast and had a very quick run to Aston Marina without stopping once from the traffic lights on the top of Reigate Hill all the way to the marina car park!

It was so good to be back and the sun shone to welcome us. M always says how lovely it is to have everything clean and freshly washed - bedding, towels, clothers, etc.

We'd arranged to meet our good friends Mel and Peter at No. 26 for G&Ts at 6:00, followed by dinner. As ever, it was a super evening full of laughter.

On Thursday morning we started with breakfast in the M&S café, sitting on their terrace overlooking the canal just outside Stone. The engine started without any problems and we set off on MM at mid-day but this time Nick wasn't there to wave us off as it was his day off. As ever, the first lock is Sandon, where the old lime kiln had been cleared of overgrowth. Several years ago, we were lucky enough to stop here on the one day of the year when it was open to the public. It was fascinating; a small work of architectural interest as well as industrial.

Unlike two weeks ago, nobody fell in the lock this time!

A kingfisher, who seems to be a local resident, played tag with us along the canal. Always just out of reach for a good photograph. It was quite autumnal; the temperature never rose over 15deg all day.

We'd agreed to moor alongside the garden of our other good friends, Bridgett and Peter in Weston-upon-Trent. Our regular space, right outside their garden, was occupied so we moored a little further back.  They couldn't see us arrive and it took a phone call before they came to join us for a bit of tea and cake. It was so good to see them.

We chatted for so long that we decided it was far to late to travel any further, M declared it was time to start preparing supper and so we stayed there overnight.

Today: 5 miles, 1 lock and 2.4 hours

Trip: 24 miles, 9 locks and 18.3 hours.
