Farewell to Braunston.

Wednesday 9th October, 2013 near Brinklow.
We made a fairly early start after breakfast. It was very pleasant cruising from Northamptonshire into Warwickshire through a very rural lanscape with its mediaeval "ridge and furrow" fields very much in evidence. It was also fascinating to see evidence of the original meandering course of the North Oxford Canal. When originally built, the canal took 43 miles to cover 15 miles as the crow flies! In the 1820s the canal was shortened by no less than 15 miles by making embankments and cuttings!
In Rugby, we stopped for some lunch and visited a very large Tesco next to the canal. There just happened to be a Costa there too!  Pure coincidence (not!).
Although it was getting decidedly cold, we thought it best to push on while the dry weather held. Of course, it did not hold out for long and so we got quite cold and wet later in the afternoon.
You might have noticed that for the last couple of days there have been fewer photographs in our diary. There is a reason! As we crouched under the umbrella in the rain, somehow M's camera got knocked overboard in its case. R immediately put MM into reverse to back up and retrieve it - but then to our horror, as we watched, it rolled over and slowly sank into the dark brown water. Gone forever! Poor M was so upset as it had pictures from the last two days, including pictures of M's friend Sue who came to see us yesterday.
Despite feeling a trifle depressed over this, we managed to find some very pleasant rural moorings just east of Brinklow and were rewarded with a pretty, if windy, sunset and a bright new moon following. This was taken with R's camera and is the sole surviving photo from today!
Today: 14 miles, 3 locks and 6.0 hours (plus 4.5 at Braunston for Power)..
Trip:  516 miles, 334 locks and 418.1 hours.
