Monday 20th August, 2012 at Honeystreet.
Today, we made our way back to MM at Honeystreet after a lovely weekend back home in Reigate with a birthday dinner for Janice and a birthday treat for R to see the "Yeoman of the Guard" as part of the Proms at the Albert Hall.
The fast train from Reading delivered us to Pewsey in just over thirty minutes. We needed the usual "few bits," so we walked up to the Co-op Supermarket in Pewsey intending to take a taxi from there back to Honeysteet. However, it turned out that there is an "Bookable Bus" that runs every hour. You have to book it by phone but it will deliver you to any of the local villages. We booked it to take us to Honeystreet and were able to use our bus passes - so it was a lot cheaper than a taxi!
The bus turned out to be a mini coach that follows a meandering route through local villages, picking up and dropping off old codgers like us along the way!
We saw that some of the fields had been harvested, with the straw bundled into stooks. We discovered that this straw was being grown for roof thatching locally. Most of the local cottages were thatched and we saw three or four "Master Thatchers" at work.
Back at the wharf, we opened up MM and afterwards went for a walk up to the Barge Inn to reconnoitre moorings for tomorrow, then walked up to look at "Well Cottage," a B&B where Carol and Philip will be staying for the next two nights.
The owner, a pleasant lady called Brenda, saw us wandering around and, when we explained why we were there, asked if we would like to see the room. It was charming and we were sure that Carol and Philip would love it. It was a pure coincidence that they found a B&B only 300 yards from Honeystreet and MM's mooring, as they were actually looking for a B&B near Pewsey.
It was a lovely evening for a walk as the sun cast shadows on the chalk downs to the north and the white horse.
Tomorrow, we are planning to walk up on to the downs to the white horse.
No miles or locks as we are still at Honeystreet Wharf and plugged in to the mains.
