Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th September 2023 in Nantwich.
We had decided to spend a couple of days in Nantwich but on Tuesday we hardly moved from MM as it poured with rain all day. In the afternoon, R walked in to town under an umbrella for a coffee but M chose to stay on the boat and catch up with some jobs. So, a very quiet day!
Wednesday morning dawned with a clear blue sky and the forecast promised sun all day.
M immediately got the washing machine going while R dug the washing line out of the engine room.
Once the washing was on the line, we started to walk into the town but, as we walked away from the aqueduct, M happened to look back and noticed that there were mooring spaces on the south side of the aqueduct. We needed to move MM on today anyway, as we had already been on 48 hour moorings for two days.
R went back to move MM as we wanted to stay another night around here, while M continued on in to the town and M&S for a "few bits". This cottage is on the road into town and M has always admired it. A sign over the door reads "AD 1502".
On the way back from M&S, we saw these lovely planters each containing a different herb including Rosemary, Lavender, Mint, Thyme, Basil and Marjoram.
No trip into Nantwich would be complete without a visit to the Coffee Shop & Bookshop for a coffee and cake! And the planters on the right of the photo contained yet more herbs so it was very aromatic sitting where we did.
Much of the town was destroyed in a massive fire in 1583 but was then rebuilt with some financial help from Queen Elizabeth I. Many of those late 16th century buildings survive (including the Coffee Shop & Bookshop) particularly in the centre of town and it is brilliant that they have been looked after so well and are still in use. It truly is a lovely town.
On our way back to MM, we passed this van belonging to a local dog trainer. We loved the name!
Back at the aqueduct, R waited at the lights carrying the "few bits".
R had moved MM just a few hundred yards to the next set of moorings so that we could legally stay another night. He had actually moved MM several hundred yards with the washing line up and our "smalls" blowing gaily in the breeze for all the world to see! It must have been quite a sight to any motorist passing under the aqueduct as MM went over!
MM only moved a few hundred yards, otherwise she had the time off.
